The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere.
“Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day".
On 22nd July 2014, some of the girls decided to spend the day (and not only 67 minutes) at the Sunshine Association in Craighall. This is a non-profit organisation that supports children with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. The organisation not only supports the children, but their families and communities as well. They believe that early intervention is crucial to the development of these children and offer a programme to children with disabilities/delays from the age of 18 months.
Upon arrival, Ms. Shannon O’Keefe (Coordinator) briefed us on the day’s activities and showed us around. After the briefing, the ladies were divided into classes where they told stories to the children, played with toys, fed some of them and sang along to “Old McDonald’s Farm”. The objective of the day was to spend quality time with each of the children and help them have a little fun.
To all you wonderful ladies
THANK YOU for taking the time out to spend the day at the Sunshine Craighall centre - for your energy, patience, commitment, interest, compassion and most of all the love that you gave the children and the respect you offered all members of staff.
It was a wonderful day and a tribute to Madiba who would have been real proud of all of you for your unconditional love and “specialness” that you shared with us.
THANK YOU for your generosity in donating every item from the Wish List, in quantitities and all the extras, the toys, books, clothing, stationery, sweets and treats, toiletries, cleaning goods, food and the slab of chocolate that was given to each staff member and volunteer.
It took me a week with my staff to sort everything, put it into stock and then pack it away, I really appreciate everything, thank you.
THANK YOU for your assistance in the classes, with the children during painting, with feeding and during the morning. You all just fitted in with the day and became a part of our day. My staff were really moved with the kindness you shared, the kids loved sharing their school with you and I am deeply moved by your generosity and enthusiam shared on the day.
It is people like yourselves, through your support, that make it possible for us to continue offering services, to our special children, their families and communities.
Thank you for making a difference in all our lives and for making it the best Mandela Day!
Yours Very Sincerely,
Craighall Early Intervention Centre
